Jason Skellett / Artist & Co Founder of Studio Skellett
Jay didn’t arrive in the art world looking for permission. He built a career in print first. Decades of discipline. Process. Precision. Understanding how images function, how they’re produced, repeated, and distributed. How do they lose meaning?
Then life interrupted. Loss doesn’t negotiate. It doesn’t arrive cleanly or leave quietly. The death of both parents collapsed the distance between past and present, between him and Paul, between what mattered and what didn’t. So the direction changed. Not as a reinvention. As a correction.
Studio Skellett wasn’t a brand decision. It was a refusal to keep postponing what mattered. Painting and sculpture followed, not as escape, not as sentiment, but as function. A way to hold grief without reducing it. A way to translate something that doesn’t fit into a conversation.
Look at the work. Not the backstory. Because the instinct is always the same, to soften it, contextualise it, make it easier to approach. To call it “therapy” and move on. But this isn’t about recovery. It’s about presence. Jay was later diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Uninvited. Non-genetic. Irrelevant to the outcome. The work didn’t change. The expectation might. So question that.
Why does context alter value? Why does difficulty demand explanation before recognition? Jay and Paul work independently, but not in isolation. They are there for each other, aiding, inspiring and critiquing. They don’t complete each other.
They sharpen each other. This is not collaboration as comfort. It’s alignment. Two bodies of work. One refusal: To be reduced. To be explained away. To be seen only through what’s been endured.
Look at the work again. That’s the point.
We take on commissions selectively. Not to decorate, but to create something that belongs, specifically, to you and nowhere else. If you understand the work, you already know what to do.
