Paul Skellett / Artist & Co-Founder of Studio Skellett

“Define your space. Not with decoration,  with intent. Studio Skellett isn’t a gallery in the traditional sense. It’s a position.

The work sits between disciplines—painting, sculpture, material, and surface. Not fixed. Not passive. Each piece is built, not just made. Layered. Disrupted. Resolved.Look at it properly. This isn’t about filling a wall or matching a room. It’s about choosing something that holds its ground, in your space, and against your expectations.

Original means exactly that. One of one. No repetition. No dilution. The influences are there if you need them: classical structure, urban texture, tension between control and erosion, But the work doesn’t rely on a reference to justify itself. It exists. Fully formed. Without explanation.”

Paul developed Fibromyalgia in his early twenties. Chronic pain. Fatigue. Cognitive interference. No resolution. No clean narrative. No visible proof. Look at the work. Not the condition. Because this is where most people fail, you’re trained to respond to what you recognise. To categorise. To sympathise. To move on.Sympathy is easy. It requires nothing. Respect is different. Respect asks you to reconsider what you value.

Whilst exhibiting in St Andrews, an injured seagull hit the ground. The flock turned on it instantly. No hesitation. No sentiment. Removal of weakness. We call that instinct “nature.” Then pretend we’ve outgrown it. But if a person can’t consistently perform, produce, or present in ways you understand, what happens? They fade. Quietly. Efficiently. Socially acceptable.

So look again. This work is not an appeal. It does not want sympathy. It does not explain itself for your comfort. It exists. Fully. Deliberately. Without permission.

Paul, alongside his brother Jay, didn’t turn to art to process pain. They built a language that doesn’t rely on being believed. The condition is still there. Irrelevant. The question is not what he carries. The question is:

why you needed to know before you decided the work had value.

Studio Skellett take on commissions selectively. Not to decorate, but to create something that belongs, specifically, to you and nowhere else. If you understand the work, you already know what to do.
